Winter/Spring 2025

Fall and winter have been very busy! I've been back teaching full time at Capilano U after a year off. From December 17-January 7 Kofi Gbolonyo and I took 24 students from Capilano U to Ghana. It was a wonderful experience for everyone with lots of music, dancing, and incredibly rich culutural and human experiences. I came back to some fun musical collaborations with Kofi, Dr. Kwashie Kuwor, Kurai Mubaiwa, Awal Alhassan, Curtis Andrews and many others at our big "Celebrate Africa" show in January. It was an honour to share the stage with those folks and especially with my old teacher, Albert St. Albert. Then there was a very special gig at Zameen Art House with a new band exploring intersections of Persian classical music, Carnatic music and jazz with Amir Eslami, Sina Hosseini, Vidya Vankayala and Curtis Andrews.

Gigs coming up:

  • April 13 with the Offering of Curtis Andrews at Tyrant Studios
  • May 3 with East Meets East at Gloria Dei church in North Vancouver tickets
  • May 7 at Fabrique St George with Les Djangophiles
  • May 30 at Zamee Art House with Clyde Reed Quartet

Many thanks to so many who drove us around, fed us and hosted us in various places and especially to Curtis for working so hard on booking gigs, travel, and accomodation. Indian hospitality is incredible and the audiences were second to none in terms of appreciation and enthusiasm. More pictures to come, I hope.

The new normal

Concerts and gigs came back fast and furious for me this past Fall. There have been so many things going on I haven't had time to think, let alone update a website. A few highlights from October and November include: a gig with Van Django and the Kamloops Symphony video recordings and concerts with Naadaleela ensemble some gigs with my old friend, Len Aruliah and a marvelous week of rehearsal and a performance with the great Trichy Sankaran and the Offering of Curtis Andrews. I was lucky enough to perform with Sankaran a few years back and figured that it might be a lifetime career highlight to be treasured but likely not repeated....but thanks to my dear brother, Curtis Andrews, it happened again! Sankaran Sir is a simply a wonder of musical depth and skill. What a transcendent experience it was to be in his presence. Video recordings from the show will be coming soon as part of an online festival. See below for a few photos.

MORE NEW MUSIC

Despite all the covid troubles, I have been lucky enough to participate in several recordings this past year. Two of these were released April 2. "Lazz and Friends: Monarch Sessions" is a collaboration with a wonderful singer and lyricist, Colin Lazzerini. Colin and I have co-written several songs and a bunch of them are featured on this album. Curtis Andrews "Speaking Hands" has been a massive undertaking with many musicians on various continents making contributions. I loved playing with Curtis and everyone on the album but a real highlight was recording and performing with the great mrdangam player, Sri Trichy Sankaran, who joins us on 4 tracks.

New Release

"Souvenirs de la Seine" has been released. This is music inspired by Django Reinhardt and French valse musette. In some ways this is quite different from previous work of mine and with good reason. The album is came out of the Covid isolation of Spring 2020 and was assembled over that time and through the summer. I play guitar, clarinet, accordion, and melodica and am joined by great pals, Rob Kohler (bass) and one two tracks by Toronto drummer, Joe Sorbara. Hope you enjoy!

MUSIC IN ISOLATION

July 3, 2020

Covid 19 has brought some changes to my artistic and teaching worlds. All the gigs are cancelled and Isolation means things have been moving slower than normal, but creativity is still there and music is still being made. I'm still practicing every day, writing new music, thinking about music. Who knows what the future will bring for all of us? For now, I am fortunate to have some studio projects to work on: a new recording with percussionist/composer Curtis Andrews is in the works, I'm just mixing another recording with Vinny Golia, and there is project of Django-style music that is nearing completion....in the mean time, I

wish everyone health and safety in these crazy times!

"Tales from the zoo" releaseD

November 29, 2018

"Tales from the Zoo" has just been digitally released. Click the album cover to go to the soundcloud album. Hard copies of CDs will arrive very soon. Email me for a copy. I'm so excited to have had the opportunity to record with Vinny Golia (saxes, piccolo, bass clarinet), Greg Campbell (drums, cornet) and my long-time collaborator and mentor, Clyde Reed (bass). The title of the CD is a reference to some great stories told to the band by Vinny. His father was a zookeeper at the Bronx Zoo. Vinny grew up around the animals and keepers at the zoo has a great appreciation for the natural world. Many thanks are due:

  • to the Quan Family PD Fund for helping make this happen
  • to Clyde for hosting the rehearsals and getting us all in touch
  • to Vinny and Greg for traveling so far
  • to my skillful and creative daughter for the cover art.

"Reliable parts" releaseD

November 25, 2018

"Reliable Parts" has just been digitally released. Click the album cover to go to the soundcloud album.

This a recording of trio improvisations with my good friends, Joe Sorbara (drums) and Clyde Reed (bass). After several months of regularly working together we seem to have developed a particular way of improvising together that is really rewarding.

"Breathing machines" digital release

November 18, 2018

"Breathing Machines" has been digitally released. Click the album cover to go to the bandcamp album. Hard copies of CDs are available. You can order a copy from bandcamp.

Narwhal is a new music ensemble at Capilano University. "Breathing Machines" is the result of a year-long collaboration between Narwhal and the brilliant young composer/multi-instrumentalist/singer, Ridley Bishop. Ridley made an amazing recording of songs for vocie and wind quartet where he sang and played all the wind instruments himself. When I heard it, I knew we had to do them with a large ensemble.

The album was a major undertaking. Ridley and I arranged the music for seven female voices, 2 bass clarinets, guitar, bass, vibes, piano, and drums. The rehearsal process lasted several weeks and, after a truly epic live performance of the music, we spent many days in the studio. The students bought into the project 100% and their performances went far above and beyond 'student work'. Ridley's writing is truly unique, original, and beautiful. Many thanks to Lawrence Wu and Roland Choe for all the engineering work on the show and the CD.

Hafez modirzadeh visit

November 15, 2018

It has been a wonderful week hanging out with my friend, Hafez Modirzadeh. Hafez is a great saxophonist and composer based in San Francisco. He had a week-long residency in my department at Capilano U. He worked with my students in various settings throughout the week. hafez' work incorporates sounds and concepts from his Persian heritage into the jazz tradition. We were also able to rehearse and play some of his new music at Presentation House with Joe Sorbara (drums) and Tommy Babin (bass). Hafez is a truly original thinker and player. An inspiring week!

a week of magic

September 30, 2018

I've just finished a week of rehearsing, recording and performing with Trichy Sankaran and the Offering of Curtis Andrews. Curtis has been Sankaran's disciple for over twenty years and did all the work organizing the visit, grant writing (thanks Canada Council!) logistics as well as writing some music. Sankaran Sir was also commissioned to write a piece for the occasion "Chapu Tala Malika", a piece that turned out to be as difficult as it is beautiful in its rhythmic architecture. The piece was constructed around a 24 beat cycle of chapu talas in 3, 5, 7, and 9. To spend time playing with and learning from Sankaran Sir was truly a privilege. I feel like my rhythmic understanding and ability has grown exponentially as a result. His musical precision, gorgeous drum tones, deep laya (time feel or groove), improvisational prowess, and excellent jokes made for an enlightening and uplifting ten days. The experience was surely one of the top musical highlights of my career thus far. Curtis, Dave Spidel, Robin Layne, Vidyasagar Vankayala, and Kaushik Sivaramakrishnan were dream band-mates throughout. Pictures courtesy of Kaushik..

recording and concert with vinny golia

July 2, 2018

I've been fortunate to spend the last week rehearsing, recording and playing with Vinny Golia, Clyde Reed, and Greg Campbell. It has been a lot of fun musically and very important opportunity for personal growth as well. Vinny is amazing in so many ways. Many thanks to the Quan Family PD Fund for help in making this happen. Recording will come out later this year.

Photos from Narwhal concert

December 2, 2018

Narwhal is a mixed vocal/instrumental ensemble that I direct at Capilano University. The group focuses on student compositions and arrangements as well as collaborations with composers and players from a wide variety of musical styles and genre. Recent Cap Jazz grads, Sara Kim (voice) and Mili Hong (drums) were special guests this semester as we explored a large ensemble version of Sara's Watermill Project: fusions between Korean folk music, jazz, and rock. More photos of the concert can be viewed here: https://flic.kr/s/aHsksgUpeA

New CD plus release concert: Brad Muirhead 4tet and more

October 2, 2017

I've been working regularly with trombonist and composer, Brad Muirhead, since 1992. He is quite an amazing musician and organizer with his own unique way of thinking about and playing music. Playing with him and trying to achieve his vision for his work has taught me a great deal about myself and about music in general. Brad is releasing his new CD "Old/In/Out/New" at pat's Pub this saturday. as on the record, there will be the regular quartet with Bernie Arai (drums), Brent Gubbels (bass) and me (guitar) plus Jennifer Scott (voice), Raphael Geronimo (percussion), Brad Turner (piano/trumpet) and a host of trombones including Luis Melgar, Ellen Marple, Greg Farrugia, and Brian Harding. Don't miss it!

Len aruliah quintet cd release

August 5, 2018

I'm excited to be part of No Complications, a new CD recording by my dear friend, Len Aruliah. Len and I have been working together since 1990 and it is always a joy and a challenge to play his beautiful and intricate compositions. I play guitar and accordion on the album and also mixed and mastered it. It sounds great, so please go to CD Baby to buy a download or physical CD. https://store.cdbaby.com/Artist/LenAruliah
